International Water Day. What is it like to carry 40 pounds of water day in day out?

Emmanuel International (EI), based in Stouffville, Ontario, has launched a Clean Water and Sanitation Project in Malawi. Over 3500 sanitation facilities will be built over the next 3 years.

It is difficult to understand, but over 40% of the population in Malawi are lacking access to these sanitation facilities. When you don’t have clean water you can’t grow food,  you can’t build housing, you can’t stay healthy, you can’t stay in school and you can’t keep working.

Instead of being able to go to school, care for those in need, grow food, or do the other necessary tasks required in a community, children and adults are spending several hours a day walking to find and transport water.

Nearly one billion people do not have access to clean, safe water. Let’s celebrate International Water Day, today March 22. Let’s make this fundamental resource available to all. We can start by appreciating what we have. If you want to do more check out the work of EI and similar organizations.
