101 Things I Don’t Know How To Teach My Son (But Wish I Could) #13 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Dear Son,

A song I grew up with and really like is The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Both the original version by The Band, and the very successful cover by Joan Baez are worth listening to. I hope you do sometime.

The song is about a very important time in American history (you’ll have to fill in the blanks yourself!).

There is a verse that goes like this:

You take what you need and leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best.

What is meant by “taken the very best”?

Love Dad
